Dave Byrd has found a place to land!
New for the 2010 season in the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series will be the number 42 entry from Kenny Whalen Racing featuring the 2007 Series Champion, Dave Byrd, as the driver.
Car owner Kenny Whalen and his Kenny Whalen Racing Team are not new to the series or to racing in general, previously fielding entries for various drivers in various series.
“I’ve driven part time for the Whalens for years,” stated Dave Byrd. “I’ve been friends with Kenny since we were probably 10 years old running around in the stands at the old Tully Road San Jose Speedway.”
The other Whalen in the “Whalens” that Dave refers to is Kenny’s brother, Jimmy Whalen, Team Chief Mechanic and Engine Builder.
“We were teenagers when my neighbor and I built our first race car. It was the last race of the year and we were out of engines,” explained Dave. “Jimmy Whalen loaned us one of his engines and we went out and won the championship at the same Tully Road San Jose Speedway over Jeff Prescott and his Rod Osterlund owned, soon to be Winston Cup, team. Jimmy and I have been friends ever since.”
The last hurdle for the KWR Team is time or a lack of it! In the interest of “doing things right” the team will probably not make the opening race for the series at All American Speedway in Roseville, California, scheduled for Saturday, March 27th. The “practical” plan is to join the series at the second stop on the tour, scheduled to be run at Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, California on Saturday, April 17th.
