May 11, 2010 - Jonathon Gomez Posts Podium Finish In Vegas Clash
TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (May 10, 2010) Jonathon Gomez continued his aggressive travel schedule and competed at Las Vegas, NV for the third race of the season for the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series. The Blackjack "121" presented by GOLiveStream.TV was the second race at the Bullring for the 27-year competitor and the track is quickly becoming one of his favorites as he posted a third place performance among a stout field of competitors.
After qualifying fourth and starting sixth after the 9-car invert, Gomez just wanted to log laps and let the race unfold without incident. Unfortunately for Gomez, the action started early, but fortunately he managed to avoid any contact though he lost several positions dropping him pack to the 15th position.
After two races where he fought an ill-handling race car, the Craig Raudman led crew for Bob Strandwold Racing had a car that met with his liking and he began to move back up through the field.
By lap 15, Gomez had worked his way back to the 12th position and by lap 20 he was back inside the top ten. On lap 25 he took over the the seventh position and on lap 35 he moved into sixth. He kept his fenders clean and by lap 50 he had negotiated lapped traffic to take over the fifth position.
Gomez moved his Century Boatland Chevrolet into the fourth position on lap 59 and traded positions with Eric Holmes, Auggie Vidovich, and Jim Pettit over the next 25-laps before settling into the third spot where he would run the remainder of the race.
"The car was a blast to drive," Gomez said. "After struggling with the setup the first two races, this car was a rocket ship," Gomez said. "I really wanted to win this race but a top three finish is a really good outing for the team. We were a lot better on long runs so the cautions really hurt us because it took us several laps to get the car to come in."
The finish moved Gomez up to sixth place in the standings just 14-points out of fifth and 126-points out of the top spot. "We race to win and winning races and the championship is our goal," Gomez offered. "We keep running in the top three we will have our day."
Jonathon Gomez is in his fourth year of competitive racing having won local track titles at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls and competed in various Late Model events the past couple of seasons. He has started ten NASCAR K&N Pro Series races since 2008 scoring five top ten finishes and currently sits tenth in the championship standings. Gomez will contend for championships in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour this season.
Jonathon Gomez is supported by Heritage Cattle Company, Century Boatland, J&C Custom Harvesting, United Oil, Modern Machinery, DJ Safety, and Gomez Farms. The next NASCAR K&N Pro Series event for Gomez will be at Iowa Speedway May 23 where he will debut a brand new KHI Inc. built Chevrolet. The next event on the SRL schedule is June 12 at Stockton (CA) Speedway.
