KALISPELL, Montana — SRL regularJared Vorse returned to the site of his first ARCA West victory and picked up his second Firecracker Tundra 125 in the last three seasons over hard-charging Alex Lessor and Bodie Morton as Montana Raceway Park celebrated the Fourth of July holiday with five divisions of on-track fireworks.
Also earning victories in the special July 4 action were Cameron Hayley (Canadian Baby Grands), Chris Warburton (Bombers), Bill Mitchell (Crusin' Compacts) and Kyle Basler (Hornets). Racing was run on Sunday as inclement weather in the Flathead Valley postponed the prior evening's scheduled events by one day. Admission was free on Sunday and a packed house saw over 200 laps of racing in a three-hour period.
Brian Levant led the 21-car ARCA West Ignite Series field to the green flag after capturing his third pole award of the season. The Calgary, AB native has earned a pole on two late model touring divisions (ARCA West and Rocky Mountain Challenge Series) and the fast time award at the 45th Annual Yakima Speedway Apple Cup in a span of three months. In each instance the driver of the Cowtown Motorsports Toyota has made his speed work to top-flight finishes and Sunday would be no different.
Levant held the point through the race's first 25 laps before Vorse cleared in his Knight Fire Protection Chevrolet. By lap 80 Lessor had moved by Levant for second place and set his sights on the lead with 45 laps to go. Morton maintained a strong presence in fourth place through the races first 80 laps then used an inside move to clear Levant for third and chase the leaders down, gaining track position in the corners as Lessor pressured Vorse for the lead.
With lapped traffic allowing the top-3 to stay bunched up Levant was able to keep the leaders in sight as Vorse, Lessor and Morton picked their way through to clean air with 15 laps to go in the race.
A spin in turn No. 4 brought out a green-white-checkered finish with Vorse getting a big jump on Lessor when racing resumes. Lessor caught Vorse in turn No. 1 with the leader moving to the high side to stop Lessor's momentum. Contact between the pair gave Vorse a three-car length lead as the checkered flag flew.
"We had a good car here all day but Alex was making me work for it there at the end when my tires started to go away. We touched in (turn No.) 2 and that was my fault but he raced me clean and this Knight Fire Protection Chevrolet was awesome when it counted," Vorse said in victory lane. "The crew worked hard to get this car ready since it's been sitting off in the corner of the shop from the NASCAR All-Star Showdown weekend back in the winter. It seemed to run real well and we can't wait to get it back out here again if this is the kind of results it has in it."
