SPEARS Southwest Tour Series Returns to Madera for Big Weekend

 

 

Bakersfield, CA – This Saturday night the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series returns to Madera for the second time in 2014, it is the fifth event of the ten-race SPEARS Southwest Tour Series championship season. Saturday’s event is Madera Speedway’s biggest race of the year featuring the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series “51 FIFTY Energy Drink 125 presented by AmeriPride Services”, the Lucas Oil Modifieds “Protect the Harvest California Farmer’s 75”, the LoanMart Open Late Model Series 100, the SRL S2 Tour Series, Legends of the Pacific/SRL Legends Tour, Open Hobby Stocks and Madera’s annual ‘Fourth of July Celebration’ fireworks show. Racing begins at 4:15pm; opening ceremonies take place at 5:50pm.

 

 

NOTES:

 

CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER: Current SPEARS Southwest Tour Series championship leader Brandon White scored his first career series victory at the March 15th season opener at Madera. White has not finished outside the top four so far in 2014.

 

TOP THREE: White, Jeremy Doss and Derek Thorn who are currently first, second and third in the championship standings, have completed all 471 laps so far in 2014. Doss has zero DNF’s in his SPEARS Southwest Tour Series career, which began in March of 2013.

 

SECONDS: Manteca’s Ross Strmiska finished a close second to White at Madera on March 15th, which was Strmiska’s second consecutive second place finish at Madera. Strmiska is currently sixth in the championship standings, even though he suffered a DNF at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

 

TWICE IN ’13: 2012 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series champion Derek Thorn, won both Madera Speedway events in 2013. Thorn is perfect in 2014 qualifying with four Rockwell Watches Fast Time Awards.

 

 

MILESTONE START: Southwest Tour veteran and former Irwindale Speedway Super Late Model champion Greg Voigt, will make his 50th career SPEARS Southwest Tour Series start this Saturday. Voigt is currently fifth in the championship standings driving the NTS Motorsports Chevrolet.

 

BYRD RETURNS: 2007 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series champion Dave Byrd, returns for his first series start of 2014 driving the Whalen Motorsports #02.

 

TOP ROOKIES: Top SPEARS Southwest Tour Series Rookie-of-the-Year contenders, Garret Archer of Black Diamond, Washington and Cole Loftsgard of Lake Havasu, Arizona, finished 6th and 10th respectively at the opener at Madera on March 15th. Neither Archer nor Loftsgard has suffered a DNF this season.

 

FIRST MADERA SERIES START: Blaine Rocha from Oakdale, CA will be making his second SPEARS Southwest Tour Series career start, and his first at Madera Speedway. Rocha, the teammate of Ross Strmiska, also competes in the Madera Speedway Late Model division.

 

TOP TEN: The current top ten in the 2014 SPEARS Southwest Tour Series championship standings: Brandon White 675 points (1 win), Jeremy Doss 665 (1 win), Derek Thorn 657 (2 wins), Jacob Gomes 584, Greg Voigt 583, Ross Strmiska 581, Garret Archer 568, Keith Spangler 545, Carlos Vieira 544, Cole Loftsgard 534.

 

S2 TOUR LEADERS: Bakersfield’s Brandon Weaver is the current SRL S2 Tour Series point leader at 953 points, followed by Johnny Butler with 931 and Chris Morrison with 887.

 

SRL LEGENDS: Tony Mangini leads the SRL Legends Tour championship with 461 points, over his brother Tim who has 460, Eric Olsen is third at 428, Brandon Weaver fourth and Eddie Garone in fifth.
