SPEARS Southwest Tour Series Returns to Rocky Mountain Raceway on Memorial Day Monday

Bakersfield, CA – For the fourth consecutive year, the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series will make its annual trip to the Rocky Mountain Raceway 3/8-mile oval just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. This Memorial Day Monday, the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series “Century Motorsports and Marine 125” will headline one of Rocky Mountain Raceway’s biggest annual events, “Military Appreciation Night” which will also feature Double Deckers, Focus Midgets and Jr. Stingers. All current and former military receive free spectator admission; accompanying family members receive half-price spectator admission. The SPEARS Southwest Tour Series event winner will receive a $4,000 payout, plus a commemorative Rockwell watch.

Near capacity crowds have watched three highly competitive SPEARS Southwest Tour Series races in 2011,’12, and ’13, with Manteca’s Jacob Gomes holding off M.K. Kanke and Derek Thorn for the win in 2011, and Thorn battling Jim Pettit to win the last two events at Rocky Mountain Raceway.

“It was a big win for us at Rocky Mountain,” said Gomes of his 2011 win. “We had a great late race battle with Kanke and Thorn that year. With about ten to go they (Kanke and Thorn) both got under me, but the car came alive in the second grove and we were able to hold them off for the win. It was the first time the series raced at RMR and there was a huge crowd that night, so it was a memorable win for us.”

As the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series heads to Rocky Mountain Raceway this Memorial Day, Upper Lake, California’s Jeremy Doss leads the championship standings after three races, with Brandon White second, just five points off the lead with 505 points, Thorn is third with 477, with Ross Strmiska and Carlos Vieira rounding out the top five with 429 and 424 points respectively.

“We feel really good about going back to Salt Lake,” stated Doss. “We finished fourth there last year in our rookie season, and so far our car has been really good at each race this year, so we’re looking forward to a good weekend.”

SPEARS Southwest Tour Series open practice will take place on Sunday from 5pm to 8pm. On Monday, spectator gates open at 4pm, qualifying at 5:00pm, local division heat races at 6:15pm and the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series “Century Motorsports and Marine 125” being the first main event of the night at 7:15pm.
