Series Start Number 92 for Spangler

Series Start Number 92 for Spangler

Keith Spangler will return to the Spears Srl Southwest Tour Series, when the series heads to Madera Speedway on September 29th, for the “SPEARS Southwest Tour 125 presented by 51 FIFTY Energy Drink“. The series veteran has had an unusually difficult 2018 campaign, without a single top-ten to show for his efforts. Spangler has been a fixture in that category for the entirety of his racing career. He currently sits third all-time in SRL top-tens with 54, behind only Derek Thornand Jim Pettit II. The former Saugus Speedway & Saugus Swap Meet driver feels his financial limitations, make it a huge challenge for him, and his all volunteer crew.

“It is really hard to compete these days, with all the great teams and equipment in the SRL, when you don’t have the financial ability to do any testing”, Spangler told the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series. “It is so competitive now, with many teams having resources from many of the best minds in racing on the East Coast. I am an old school racer, and don’t have those resources or connections, but I love racing with the best. I have a very competitive personality, and we will work hard to make our program better, and get back to racing up front.”

Spangler continued, “I really have to thank David Nava Mulcahy and Retro Custom Metals for all of their support and friendship over the years. Without that friendship and financial support, I wouldn’t be able to race today. We took the last race off, at The New Stockton 99 Speedway, so we could try a few new things on the car. I hope those changes help, and that we can get back to being competitive, and running with the fast cars. We have struggled in qualifying, over the last several years, but we have been able to fight our way into the top-ten on a consistent basis, once the race begins.”

With the help of his father Loren and this week’s crewman Dan and Dana, this will be series start number 92, for the veteran driver from Porter Ranch, CA. With three additional starts, he would tie Troy Ermish for the all-time series lead with 95. With the determination of the Spangler family, his good friend David “Homie” Mulcahy and the friends who help Keith out on race weekend, start number 100 should never be ruled out. If he he gets his car right at Madera, Spangler would love to compete for the $5,000 winner’s share of the purse, thanks to MPI – Max Papis Innovations. If it is really right, the “Retro Custom Copper Cabby” may find its way to Victory Lane, and Spangler’s first SRL win.
