SRL – Top 10 Countdown, Spangler

The Spears Srl Southwest Tour Series continued its growth in 2017, paying out nearly $360,000 in purse money, which included the Third Annual Winter Showdown. Seven different drivers saw victory lane, in the nine race regular season, with an average car count of just over 23 cars per event. The top 10 in points was made up of a wide variety of competitors, ranging in age from 20 to 56 years young. Today we begin our 2017 top 10 countdown, with the seasoned verteran who finished 10th, in the final SRL Championship Standings.

Keith Spangler finished the 2017 season in that tenth position, participating in eight of the nine championship events. It was Spangler’s eighth career top ten finish, in the SRL standings. Spangler counted three top ten finishes, in a season that saw an unusual three DNF’s, for the Porter Ranch, CA competitor. On the usual side of things, Spangler captured three “Rockwell TimeHard Charger Awards” to once again lead the series. His best finish of 2017 was a fifth place finish, at Madera Speedway in July.

If the 2018 season goes to plan, Spangler will pass Troy Ermish, for the number one spot in career starts, with 96 versus 95. Spangler also sits third, in career top tens, with 54. He trails only Jim Pettit, with 56, and the all-time leader, Derek Thorn with 60. For the 2018 season, Spangler will sport a new look on his Retro Custom MetalsChevy SS. When asked about the new paint scheme Spangler offered this reply. “We are going to have a whole new look for this season. It was just time for a change, but it is going to look good, and you will have to wait for Madera to see it.”

Despite several series records within his grasp, Keith, Dan, Dave, Loren, Dana and David Mulcahy(“Homie”), will be looking for just one thing, as the series heads to Madera Speedway to open the 2018 season. Touring Series win number one, for the five-time Saugus Speedway Super Late Model winner, is priority one!
