Thorn Eyes Second Championship

Thorn Eyes Second Championship

Bakersfield, CA – As the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series approaches the final race of its 2014 season, Derek Thorn is in position to win his second series championship in three years. Thorn won his first SPEARS Southwest Tour Series championship in 2012. In 2013, he missed a couple of races in pursuit of winning the NASCAR K&N Pro Series title. This season Thorn has turned four series wins into a 92-point lead over Jeremy Doss entering the finale at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on November 22nd.

“It feels good having a nice points lead heading into Vegas,” stated Thorn. “Jeremy had trouble at Kern and that allowed us to come into Vegas with a cushion, but it’s not over until it’s over.”

Thorn is now the only driver that has completed every lap of the 2014 season, and his four wins has raised his career series win record to twenty. Thorn picked up wins this year at The Bullring, Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Madera Speedway and the one mile Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colorado.

“You have to give credit where credit’s due, and Byron Campbell, Mike (Keen) and the entire Campbell Motorsports team give me a perfectly prepared car every race and that’s what wins championships. I’m in a very fortunate position to drive for such a great team.” Thorn added.

With 180 points awarded to the winner of each SPEARS Southwest Tour Series race, Thorn must finish no worse than 25th, even if Doss wins in Vegas, to secure the 2014 title.

The November 22nd SPEARS Southwest Tour Series championship finale at The Bullring will be part of the West Coast Short Track Championships weekend, which will also feature the Lucas Oil Modifieds, USAC Midgets, SRL S2 Series and Legends.
